Q. I notice you have mattresses on your website. Can you tell me the difference between a "healthy" vs. and "unhealthy" mattress? - Paula F.

A. Great question! And with fall in the air, we all want to spend a bit more time in bed these days. There are several components that make a mattress healthy.

First, you want to make sure your mattress is made of natural and organic materials. Traditional cotton is treated with pesticides. Also, synthetic materials retain moisture, whereas wool is naturally moisture repellant. Since dust mites love to breed in moisture, this can be of concern for allergy and asthma sufferers. Wool and latex are naturally dust mite resistant. Lastly, avoid chemically treated mattresses. Mattresses and pads are treated with fire-retardant chemicals (required by law) which impart health risks of their own. Wool, which is a naturally fire-retardant, is a wonderful alternative to these chemicals!
Conventional Cotton is one of the most heavily chemically sprayed crops in the world and uses 25% of the world's insecticides! Make sure to avoid this as well as bleach and synthetic dyes in your bedding.
